
The World Heritage Convention, adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO on 16 November 1972, aims to identify and maintain a list of sites that represent the characteristics of exceptional importance from a cultural point of view or natural.
Italy is the country with the highest number of UNESCO World Heritage Site. (44 sites, almost 6% of world cultural heritage).
To be included in the list of World Heritage sites must have values \u200b\u200b universality, uniqueness and irreplaceable and must meet at least one of the criteria set by the World Heritage Committee for selection.
Until 2004 the criteria were only six and four in the cultural sphere in nature.
Since 2005 there is a set of 10 criteria.
Selection criteria:
1) represent a masterpiece of human creative genius;
2) witness a significant cultural change in a given period in both the archaeological and architectural and technology, art and landscape;
3) make a witness unique or exceptional, on a cultural tradition or civilization;
4) provide an eminent example of a type of building or architectural or technological landscape showing one of the periods of human history;
5) be an outstanding example of human interaction with the 'environment
6) be directly linked to events related to ideas, beliefs and artistic and literary works which have a meaning outstanding universal (possibly in combination with other points);
7) represent natural phenomena or natural beauty and atmosphere of an outstanding aesthetic importance;
8) to be one of representative examples of major periods of history to witness the life processes geological
9) be one of the prominent examples of ongoing ecological and biological processes in the evolution of the ecosystem;
10) contain the most representative natural habitats and important for the conservation of biodiversity, including threatened areas of particular value outstanding universal in terms of science and conservation.
